Abstract

Superhero Comics and Heroism in American Culture

This paper studies how contemporary American ideology is portrayed through popular superhero comics. The first half focuses on the similarities and differences between Greek mythical heroes and American superheroes. One major difference is that American superheroes wear masked costumes whereas Greek heroes do not. The split personality signifies a significant ideology; Americans believe that they should be held responsible for both the greater good of society and their own well-being. The second part of this paper examines the development of American superheroes, starting from Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, to Iron Man. This is to suggest that the concept of heroism in American culture has gradually changed between the mid-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Specific attention is given to reasons why Iron Man becomes a public favorite nowadays, which clearly signifies the emergence of capitalism in contemporary American society.
