Abstract

The objectives of this article were to study the political contexts that impacted the construction of truth concerning the Youth Groups against the government of General Prayuth Chan-o-cha of the Manager News Agency and Matichon News Agency and to study the construction of truth concerning the Youth Groups against the Government through the Manager News Agency and Matichon News Agency by Social construction of reality framework. The qualitative research was conducted using in-depth interviews with four key informants: four news agency journalists, two political communication scholars, three anti-government youths, two managers of news agency recipients, and two recipients of Matichon News Agency.

The study findings found that the protests of Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government by the Student Union of Thailand began after the decision of the Constitutional Court to dissolve the Future Forward Party. Various protests followed until the present day via a flash mob that usually started in the afternoon and ended that night. On the Manager News Agency’s construction of truth concerning the Youth Groups, the study showed that the Manager News Agency presented news regarding the protesters negatively using one-sided opinions from technocrats, pro-government groups, or conservatives without comparison. It only criticized the protesters, saying that there must be some political parties behind them or accused the protesters of receiving support from foreign governments. Meanwhile, the study on Matichon News Agency’s construction of reality concerning the Youth Groups showed that news related to the protesters was presented with a two-sided analysis from the Youth Groups and the government with a minor opinion.
