Abstract

This article focuses on analyzing the role of grassroots communities in the process of building democracy in Thailand, framed through the concepts of grassroots politics and political participation theory. Grassroots communities, comprising farmers, laborers, and local communities, have played a significant role as mechanisms that drive policy changes and balance power structures. Their key activities include organizing groups, advocating for rights, and participating in decision-making processes. These movements not only reflect political awareness but also expose the structural limitations they face. The article presents case studies of farmers advocating land rights, workers protesting for fair wages, and local communities opposing development projects that adversely affect the environment. These movements have led to significant policy changes, such as improving minimum wages, allocating farmland, and enhancing social welfare systems. However, despite their critical role in fostering democracy, grassroots communities still encounter challenges, including economic inequality, institutional constraints, and state intervention. The article also explores the future direction of democracy, emphasizing the importance of supporting grassroots communities through decentralization, fostering collaborative networks, and providing education to raise awareness of civic rights and responsibilities. These recommendations aim to build a sustainable democracy that is inclusive and responsive to the needs of all societal groups. In addition to providing an overview of grassroots movements within the context of modern Thai politics, the article highlights the importance of civic participation as a driving force capable of propelling Thai democracy toward a sustainable future.
