NEW MUSEOLOGY AND THE STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT OF EXHIBITIONS IN THAI MUSEUMS: FROM SPACES OF DISPLAY TO SPACES OF SOCIAL DISCOURSE

Abstract

This article aims to synthesize information on the exhibition management of Thai museums through the concept of New Museology. It analyzes the differences in the definition of museums between the international and Thai contexts, as well as the application of the New Museology concept in the management of museum exhibitions in Thailand. The synthesis reveals that museums in the international context such as Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore, Gallo-Roman Museum in Belgium, Louvre Museum in France, and Ak-Chin Him-Dak Eco-Museum serve as examples of institutions that fully implement exhibition management based on New Museology. These museums demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of visitors, function as learning institutions, ensure accessibility for all target groups, and promote community participation. In contrast, the National Museums of Thailand, under government supervision, remain primarily focused on collecting and exhibiting artifacts for specialized educational purposes. However, Thailand also has museums outside governmental supervision, such as Investment Discovery Museum, Museum Siam, Bank of Thailand Learning Center, and Wat Phra That Sadet Museum, which have adopted the New Museology concept to develop exhibition management models that better align with the needs of contemporary society. This reflects that exhibition management based on New Museology can enhance Thai museums to become genuine spaces for social learning.
