Abstract

This research aims to 1. examine the types of risks faced by café businesses in Songkhla Province within the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework and 2. to propose risk management strategies to enhance business sustainability. Thirteen key informants, specifically selected from café owners, managers, and employees, participated in the study. In-depth interviews served as the primary data collection method, supported by audio recordings and field notes. The research instrument was a semi-structured interview guide, and the collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis, with credibility verified through triangulation.

The study found that cafés in Songkhla face risks across all three ESG dimensions. Environmental risks include waste management, wastewater, plastic and coffee grounds disposal, and high energy costs. Social risks involve reduced income, unstable labor, customer satisfaction issues, and internal conflicts. Governance risks relate to poor cost control, lack of transparency, and ethical concerns. Risk management strategies identified include using eco-friendly packaging, solar energy, employee benefits and incentives, community engagement, and fostering a transparent organizational culture. The findings led to an ESG-based risk management model encompassing risk identification, response, adaptation, and the creation of sustainable outcomes. The study indicates that applying the ESG framework helps reduce risks, enhance competitiveness, and promote long-term sustainability, providing guidance for SMEs and relevant organizations to develop policies and strategies.
