SANGAHAVATTHU 4: A MECHANISM FOR STRENGTHENING UNITY OF EFFORT IN THE ROYAL THAI AIR FORCE’S JOINT/COMBINED OPERATIONS

The application of Sangahavatthu 4, a Buddhist principle that helps bind, coordinate, and support people, can be linked to the concept of unity of effort in the Royal Thai Air Force’s joint/combined operations. Joint/combined operations involve multiple services, agencies, or nations with differences in command structures, roles and responsibilities, organizational cultures, resources, and operational limitations. Accomplishing a shared mission therefore does not depend solely on combat power, command systems, or military technology, but also requires cooperation, trust, clear communication, coordination, and mutual understanding among all relevant participants. This article proposes that Sangahavatthu 4 can be applied to strengthen unity of effort in joint/combined operations by linking it to the context of multi-party cooperation. Dana promotes mutual support, piyavaca promotes shared communication, atthacariya strengthens joint action, and samanattata fosters unity and cohesion. When these elements are coordinated, they help participants from different parties share common objectives, develop mutual understanding, coordinate minds and actions, and move toward mission success together. The “Jigsaw of Unity for Joint/Combined Operations” is used to explain the role of Sangahavatthu 4 in strengthening cooperation, trust, and the success of the Royal Thai Air Force’s joint/combined operations.
