APPLYING THE FOUR FOUNDATIONS OF MINDFULNESS TO PROMOTE EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL SELF-REGULATION IN YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE DIGITAL AGE

This academic article aims to analyze the application of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness in promoting emotional and behavioral regulation among young children in the digital age. The article draws on the Tipitaka, Buddhist literature, self-regulation concepts, and studies concerning mindfulness and early childhood development. The selected materials were examined through content analysis and conceptual synthesis. The analysis indicates that early childhood is a critical period for developing emotional awareness, behavioral inhibition, and social adjustment. However, inappropriate use of digital media may expose children to excessive stimulation, reduce sustained attention, and hinder the development of self-regulation. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness contemplation of the body, feelings, mind, and mental phenomena can be adapted into developmentally appropriate activities, including mindful breathing, emotional awareness, attentive listening, pausing before responding, and reflecting on feelings. These activities enable children to recognize their internal experiences, regulate emotions, inhibit impulsive behaviors, and engage with digital media more appropriately. Based on the conceptual synthesis, the M-D-E Model is proposed. The model consists of Mindful Awareness, Digital Self-Regulation, and Emotional and Social Development, with the Four Foundations of Mindfulness serving as its central foundation. The model demonstrates that age-appropriate mindfulness practices, supported by families and educational institutions, can enhance emotional regulation, behavioral regulation, and responsible digital media use. Such practices can also provide a foundation for balanced, constructive, and developmentally appropriate technology use among young children in the digital age.
