HAPPY RETIREMENT: PRE-RETIREMENT READINESS POLICY FOR SENIORS
Keywords:
Happy Retirement, Pre-Retirement Preparation, Ageing Society PolicyAbstract
This academic article aims to present the “Happy Retirement” concept as a comprehensive policy framework for building readiness before retirement in the context of Thailand’s transition to a fully aged society. The article synthesizes concepts, academic literature, research studies, and data from relevant agencies to explain retirement-related challenges in terms of income, physical health, mental health, social roles, family relationships, and self-reliance. The synthesis indicates that pre-retirement preparation should not be limited to financial savings alone, but should also encompass financial planning, health promotion and disease prevention, safe housing, maintenance of social networks, development of digital and vocational skills, and the creation of meaningful goals and roles after retirement. The article therefore proposes that such preparation should be promoted through collaboration among individuals, families, workplaces, communities, local administrative organizations, and government agencies, supported by individualized readiness assessments, integrated service systems, continuous funding, and outcome monitoring that reflects changes in quality of life. Based on this synthesis, the article proposes the 5P Happy Retirement Model, consisting of Pocket (financial readiness), Physical (physical and mental readiness), Place (housing and environmental readiness), People (family and social readiness), and Purpose (work and meaningful life readiness). These five components are mutually reinforcing and can serve as a common framework for assessment, planning, service design, and indicator development. Applying the model from working age onward can help individuals identify vulnerabilities and make timely adjustments before problems arise, thereby reducing the risks of inadequate income, illness, dependency, and social isolation. Ultimately, the model seeks to transform retirement from the end of one’s working role into a new stage of life in which individuals can remain self-reliant, socially engaged, and able to live with dignity, purpose, and happiness.
