Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to study factors related to the dementia among the elderly in
Nakhon Si Thammarat. A sample of 400 elderly people who resided in Lanska, Pak Panang, Thung Song and
Noppitam districts was chosen through multi-stage sampling. Data were collected using interview questions
and the Thai Mental State Examination (TMSE) with reliability of 0.743. Descriptive statistics including frequency, percentages, chi-square, fisher's exact tests, and contingency coefficient was employed in data analysis. The result showed that there were 111 elderly people with dementia (27.75%). The factors associated with dementia were marital status (χ2=17.565, c=0.251, P<.001), age (χ2=13.583, c=0.222, P<.01), occupation χ2=11.569, c=0.238, P<.01), hobby (χ2=11.890, c=0.208, P<.01), hearing ability (χ2= 4.962, c=0.157, P<.05), sleep disorder (χ2=4.528, c=0.150, P<.05) and consumption of supplement products (χ2=4.663, c=0.151, P<.05). Findings of this study can effectively act as basics for future planning on care and prevention of dementia among the elderly.
