Thirty elderly people aged 60 years with primary osteoarthritis and a pain score of not more than 5 points from Wat Prik Sub-district Health Promotion Hospital, Mueang District, Phitsanulok Province, were recruited using purposive sampling. The participants were diagnosed through a physical examination by an applied Thai Traditional Medicine officer and assessed for pain level using a numerical scale before and after each treatment. The data were collected before and after treatment twice a week for 4 weeks and analyzed using a paired t-test to compare the difference in knee pain before and after treatment. Results were presented with frequency, mean, percentage, and standard deviation. It was revealed that the participants receiving Court-Type Thai traditional massage with herbal compress had a mean score of knee pain decreased in the 1st week (3.33 ± 0.81), the 2nd week (2.67 ± 0.51), the 3rd week (1.50 ± 0.54), and the 4th week (0.21 ± 0.42). When the mean scores of the pain were compared between weeks 1 and 2; weeks 2 and 3; weeks 3 and 4; and weeks 1 and 4; a statistically significant difference was found (P< .001) in each week. The findings indicate that the level of knee pain can be reduced using Court-type Thai traditional massage with herbal compress in the elderly with osteoarthritis. Thus, this treatment can be an alternative medicine for relieving knee pain among the elderly with osteoarthritis.
