Needs Analysis of English Usage for Hotel Business: a Case Study of PCRU Interns

Abstract

The purposes of research aim to 1) study the needs of English usage for hotel business in four skills; speaking, reading, listening, and writing and 2) study the needs of English usage development for hotel business. The study is mixed method research design (quantitative and qualitative research). Forty – five students and hotel staffs were selected by purposive sampling for quantitative research by collecting data with descriptive statistics; frequency and percentage. After that eight hotel staffs and ten PCRU interns were selected for qualitative research (an interview) by collecting data with content analysis. The research instruments were questionnaires and semi – structure interview form. The findings revealed that 1) most informants often use English for their work (73.3%) in speaking skill (84.4%). From the interview, additionally, it was found that listening and speaking skills were very important. However, they faced some problems of the using those two skills (listening and speaking), for example, lack of vocabulary knowledge, misunderstanding of various foreign accent and lack of grammatical knowledge. 2) most informants need to develop speaking skill (71.1). In addition, they also need training for their English skills improvement including personality development skills to build a confidence and reliability of the customers. They also need improvement for the third language such as Chinese to create a chance in various occupations.
