The Practical Ethics Behaviors and the Desirable Characteristics of Thai Tourist Guides

Abstract

This study employed qualitative method. The purposes of this study were  to 1. study the practical ethics behaviors of Thai tourist guides; and 2. study the desirable characteristics of Thai tourist guides. The research instrument was a semi-structured interview form. The findings were as followed: The practical ethics behaviors of tourist guides were: 1) conduct and manners - be able to control any emotion and feelings that would affect the tourists 2) honesty – work and perform duty honestly as well as adhere to morals;  3) responsibility and attentiveness on duties – adhere work disciplines; 4) tour management – be skillful in tour management and concern of the tourists’ safety; 5) conservation of tourist attractions for sustainability – be a good role model for conservation of tourist attractions; 6) respect for cultural differences – learn and respect for cultural differences; and 7) offering equivalent service – value the importance of fair service. The desirable characteristics of tourist guides were: 1) personality – be disciplined, polite, tidy, and healthy; 2) knowledge – be knowledgeable concerning work and duty, be studious particularly in terms of tourists’ safety; 3) interpersonal skills  - be able to apply psychology at work; 4) attitude – be optimistic about profession; and 5) the art of speaking – be able to communicate precisely and concisely, be capable of using foreign languages, and avoid discussing any sensitive issues. Regarding the results of the study,  the researcher proposed a development approach of the ethical behaviors and desirable characteristics of Thai tourist guides by employing MOTIVE approach regarding 6 aspects consisting of 1) managerial skills, 2)  optimistic mindset, 3) trustworthy concern, 4) informative base, 5) versatile talent, and 6) ethical mind.  The approach can enhance the potential for high-qualified Thai tourist guides.
