Abstract
An Analysis of “The Silent Generation” of the American Society in the Mid Twentieth Century : Impacts of Business Giantism and McCarthyism. Business giantism which is an outcome of the highly technological development brought about economic abundance and mass culture to the American people in the 1950’s. The impact of large business organizations on activities of subordinate officers and employees, however, caused inner unrest, i.e. the loss of self-identity, the feeling of conformity, and the helplessness of each individual. The McCarthyism, a threat to every single citizen as a character assassination, helped make the silent majority become “the real Silent Generation.” The silent protest by beatniks and hipsters, the younger generation, reflects the failure to maintain mental healthiness of the affluent society in the fifties.
