Aims of Teaching Foreign Language : Problems to be Considered.
Abstract
One important issue in teaching foreign language is how to relate aims which are normally broad and arbitrary to objectives which are directly concerned with classroom situation. In an aims-oriented approach, three possible practices are discussed. First, the aims of pursuing education. Profession and personal needs call for ESP practice with an emphasis of listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills. Secondly, if aims are unclear or diversified they call for communicative approach with an emphasis on activities. Thirdly, if we know that there are aims among students but do not know what, this calls for affective approach followed by the use of strategy objectives with an emphasis on motivation, authentic texts and strategies to enhance self-directed learning.
