Enhancing agricultural extension system in Thailand: A case study of the central region
Keywords:
agricultural extension, central region, extension systemAbstract
The objectives of this research were to study ways to enhance the agricultural extension system in Thailand and to develop the role of agricultural staff at the local level. A questionnaire technique was used for data collection from 48 extension staff and 63 farmers. In-depth interviews and focus group discussion were used. Descriptive analysis and contents analysis were applied for data analysis. The findings revealed that efficiencies of the agricultural extension system in terms of inputs or costs of production and outputs or outcomes were satisfactory but the dimension of the administration process was at a moderate level. Therefore, improving the administration process of the Department of Agricultural Extension should be considered in order to act to suit current circumstances, including reorganization of the Department, and linkage work with local organizations. The roles of extension staff should be developed to understand farmers in a changing world, to play a role in interest-based negotiation and conflict resolution techniques, and to develop community organization.
