The Opinions of Musicians Concerning Music Study in the Music Institutes in Thailand
Abstract
The purposes of this research are to survey the opinions of musicians concerning music institutes in Thailand, to study the relationship between the sex and age of the musicians and to study the musicians’ opinions concerning studying, both music theory and performance, in music institutes and in private lessons. Sixty-two musicians working as music teachers in schools all over the country who enrolled in the summer music training sessions at Siam Kolkarn Music School in April 1984 were the subjects of this research. The results, according to percentage and Chi-square test collected from questionnaires, are that there is no relationship between sex and age at the .05 level of significance; music lessons-history of music, theory of music and music practice-studied from music institutes and from private lessons are not quite sufficient for a future career in music; music should be included in the secondary education curriculum as a compulsory course and sufficient musical instruments should be supplied for practicing; opportunity should be given to those music teachers who want to brush up their music education. Both in the music institutes and private lessons, musicians acquired knowledge in the theory of music at a fair level and music practice at a high level.
