Abstract

Multiproduct production is so complicated that it is often difficult for researchers to analyse production and cost of individual products using conventional methods and the usual aggregated data. The recent duality theory enables economists to develop such more efficient approaches as Flexible Cost Function (FCF). The translog functional form of FCF was employed by Christensen and Greene and Brown et.al. in their analyses of size efficiency in the U.S. electric power generation and railroad industries, respectively. This paper reviews the concept of multiproduct production, size efficiency, the development and application of FCF to multiproduct production analysis.
