Technology Development and Buddhistic Conceptual Approach
Abstract
Technology is the combination of technicques employed by a people for the purpose of creating a material instrument for living and of improving a social system. It is noticeable that a technological development in modern society has yielded a great impact upon society in which a certain development has contributed, and another has been harmful, to society at large. Analysed in terms of being a technicque employed for the purpose of improving a social rela - tionship, Buddhistic principles could be regarded as an abstract technology that can be employed for cultivation of morality, a highest interest to mankind. Moreover, a special feature of Buddhistic technology is its capacity to integrate and socialize a fully mature and desirable member of society in which Buddhism offers a foundamental teaching for socializing an individual and encourazing him to follow and comply himself with a code and order such as the principles of knowing the cause, knowing the meaning, knowing oneself, knowing the proper time, knowing the assembly and knowing the different individuals. Apart from these, Buddhistic principles for developing a good member of society may be seen in its emphasis upon development in all dimensions, namely, bodily or physical development, moral development, social or emotional development and intellectual development. Nevertheless, technological development in modern period has been yielding a great impact upon the institution of Buddhism as discernible in the changing value judgement, upheld by the indivi - dual follower in the matters of morality, objects, personnels and ceremonies as appeared in Buddhism’s teachings and institution. And it appears that there is a tendency for certain individuals to interpret the Buddhistic moral principle in complying with a worldly preference to seems a truly supermundane value. This tendency seems to creat creat more and more social problems difficult to solve in line of a worldly value.
