Abstract

The purposes of this research were (1) to study the structure of academic advisory systems, (2) to investigate the problems concerning the academic advisory systems, (3) to study the student using advisory services, (4) to study the opinions of the students on the advisory services, and (5) to compare the students’ opinions on the advisory services between sex and universities. The sample under study consisted of 296 administrators and academic advisers and 697 students from Kasetsart University, Silpakorn University, and Prince of Songkhlanarin University. The data was collected by on-site intensive interviews with administrators as well as questionnaires. This research analyzed through SPSS-X (Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version X). The result of the study could be summarized as follows : 1. All three universities appointed academic advisers but did not nominate the academic advisory committee. The advisers’ job description was prepared, but the advisers’ ethics and personal qualification were not mentioned. Most advisers had enough tools to use with the students. 2. The important problems concerning the academic advisory system were the lack of information and the lack of policy and procedure to increase the advisers’ moral. Other problem was the lack of counseling techniques. 3. Most students met with their advisers more than one time on each semester. They found that sometimes their advisers were not in the office. The advisers did not arrange the office hour for the students and meet with the group of students. 4. Most students had positive opinions on advisers’ personal qualifications, abilities, interest to the students and the quality of advising. The students thought their advisers had some part of information to give them. 5. The opinions on the quality of advising of male students and of those female students were different at 0.01 level of significance, the female students’ opinions were more positive than those of male students. The opinions on the quality of advising of the students from the three universities were different at 0.01 level of significance, the opinions of Kasetsart University students were more positive than of those Silapakorn University students and of Prince of Songkhlanakarin University students. The opinions of Lilpakorn University students and of Prince of Songkhlanakarin University students were not different at 0.01 level of significance.
