The Study of Local Wisdom “Kha” in Bang Phriang Subdistrict, Bang Bo District, Samut Prakan Province

Abstract

This quality research explored local wisdom related to "Kha" (galangal) in Thai society, with a specific focus on Bang Phriang Subdistrict, Bang Bo District, Samut Prakan Province. The study aimed to examine local knowledge regarding galangal cultivation, culinary applications, and health benefits. Data were collected from primary and secondary documents across various fields, including sources from the National Archives and the National Library. Additionally, field data were gathered through observations, inquiries, group discussions, and interviews with local stakeholders, such as farmers, community leaders, elders, and local sages. The findings revealed that galangal cultivation in Bang Phriang Subdistrict reflects sophisticated local wisdom in site selection, planting and propagation, harvesting, and latex washing. Regarding utilization, the local community recognized that mature galangal contains high fiber. Although galangal with dark skin is typically discarded, it retains a distinct fragrance and value; hence, the locals utilized these remnants to produce galangal water and pickled galangal. In terms of health benefits, galangal was found to be highly effective in relieving gas, alleviating bloating, and aiding digestion.
