The role of politicians and responsibility for Buddhism

Abstract

This study analyzes the intricate relationship between Buddhism and politicians in Thai society. It underscores the pivotal role of Buddhism as the foundation of Thai culture and traditions, and examines the roles of politicians in supporting and promoting Buddhism to ensure its continued presence in Thai society. The study explores the historical relationship between the state and Buddhism, and analyzes the roles of politicians in various dimensions such as budget allocation, lawmaking, policy development to promote Buddhism, and setting a positive example. Furthermore, it highlights potential challenges and obstacles that may arise from interference in the internal affairs of the Sangha or the politicization of Buddhism.

          Buddhism plays a vital role in fostering social cohesion and improving the quality of life for citizens. Supporting Buddhism is tantamount to preserving Thailand's national identity. Therefore, the role of politicians in supporting Buddhism is of paramount importance. However, politicians must exercise caution to avoid actions that could compromise the sanctity, purity, and respect accorded to Buddhism, and must respect the independence of the Sangha. This article proposes strategies to create a balance between politics and Buddhism, enabling both institutions to coexist harmoniously and contribute to the development of Thai society.
