Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the arrangement of learning elements in video clips including the techniques of online teaching via Youtube. The selected samples were 21 posted video clips of teaching classical repertoire (Romance de amor) on Youtube. Data collection was done on 1 February 2016 and the research methodology used was recording, observation and taking notes. The result of this study revealed that classical guitar teaching tactics on Youtube could be categorized into 4 groups: 1) The group with an average of ten thousand viewers per month 2) The group with an average of a thousand viewers per month 3) The group with an average of a hundred viewers per month and 4) the group with an average of ten viewers per month. The popular clips had importance factors which were 1) high resolution and clear sound, especially the first note, 2) a variety of techniques which the teachers (clip owners) usually played the repertoire before teaching a musical piece, and often taught only popular pieces of music, and 3) the figure and ground, as the teachers generally wore black clothes and set up black background to show their hands and the guitar clearly. On the other hand, the less popular clips had low screen resolution and sound, no demonstration in playing the musical piece, showed wrong sitting position, and the instructors wore soft color patterned attire.
