Lessons from the Educational Problems of Cross-Border Children During COVID-19: A Case Study of Samut Sakhon

Abstract

This research examines the learning patterns of cross-border children in Samut Sakhon during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying challenges and proposing solutions. Four key factors contribute to their learning difficulties. First, Myanmar’s political instability and border closures have put cross-border children at risk of educational disruption. Second, migrant families struggle to afford online learning devices, necessitating support from the government and private sector. Third, issues in school enrollment management hinder access to education. Lastly, unsafe learning environments, especially for children accompanying parents to work, increase risks and the likelihood of school dropouts. Some children may also face greater exposure to crime due to a lack of supervision. Additionally, xenophobia and the misconception that migrant workers spread COVID-19 exacerbate these challenges. Reducing bias and fostering understanding will enable more effective support for migrant children and their families.
