Aims and Scope:

Journal of Thai Studies is an open access journal, currently published online, with the primary aim to promote knowledge about Thai and Tai Studies. The journal is published twice a year (June and December) and includes six to eight articles in each volume covering subject matter that comes from intensive research by scholars. One of the objectives of the journal is to provide a platform to disseminate information obtained from fundamental research, however, the journal also includes articles that cover multidisciplinary studies. To date, given that the majority of the research has focused on Thai language, literature and culture, all of the articles have been in Thai, with an extended English abstract.

The subject of the articles is generally in one of the following areas of research:

1.Thai-Tai Language and Literature

Articles in this area focus on the linguistic and literary heritage of Thai-Tai communities, encompassing both historical and contemporary research. Topics include the evolution of Thai-Tai languages and their role in cultural identity. Contributions that explore linguistic innovations and the influence of globalization on Thai-Tai languages are also welcome. As well, another significant source of the contributions is research on classical and modern Thai literature, both local and regional, which may include the interplay between oral traditions and written literature.

2.Thai-Tai Culture and Anthropology

The journal is dedicated to promoting the exploration of the diverse cultural practices and social structures of Thai-Tai communities. The focus of such research is to illuminate traditions, beliefs and ways of life with articles that address themes such as kinship systems, rituals, folklore, performance arts, material culture and the impact of modernization on traditional practices. One important area that is encouraged is tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Comparative studies of Thai-Tai cultural expressions within broader Southeast Asian contexts are also encouraged.

3.Manuscript and Religion Studies

This area emphasizes the significance and importance of manuscripts and religious traditions and practices that are integral to Thai-Tai heritage. Topics include the study of ancient scripts, palm-leaf manuscripts and illustrated texts, as well as the role of religion in shaping societal values and practices. Research exploring intersections between manuscripts, spirituality and modern interpretations of sacred texts is especially welcomed.

4.Historical and Current Issues in Thai Society

This area of research examines historical and contemporary developments in Thai society, providing a platform for the critical analysis of historical and ongoing social and cultural changes. Articles that address historical topics include matters relevant to an understanding of the development of Thai society and culture.  Articles that examine contemporary issues include such topics as urbanization, digital transformation and the impact of global trends on Thai communities, with contributions that offer innovative perspectives on modern Thai society highly encouraged.
