The Roles of Music in Lanna Khao Saw Literatures

The research for this article aimed to study the role of music in Lanna Khao Saw literature. The researcher studied twenty-four pieces of Khao Saw literature published in the Lanna script between 1917-1955. The findings indicated that there were five roles of music: to welcome the main characters on their way into the city; in scenes of the main characters preparing for journeys and during the journeys; for a festive celebration in Maho Rasop scenes when the main characters were crowned as kings or got married; in scenes of lullaby in the palace; and in scenes where main characters wanted to give signals. These five roles of music that appear in Lanna Khao Saw literature are consistent with the roles of music that appear in historical documents, including legends, inscriptions, literature
and travel records of foreigners.
