Indigo–dyed Textile Wisdom and Inheritance of the Value of Indigo Textiles of the Tai Ethnic Group in Sakon Nakhon Province

Abstract
Background and objective (s): The Tai ethnic group in Sakon Nakhon Province has knowledge and skills in indigo-dyed textiles that have been inherited from generation to generation. However, this indigenous inherited wisdom has been affected by economic, social and cultural changes. The research for this article aimed to 1) analyze the wisdom of indigo-dyed textiles of the Tai ethnic group in Sakon Nakhon Province and 2) analyze the inheritance of the wisdom of indigo-dyed textiles of the Tai ethnic group in Sakon Nakhon Province.
Methodology: This research was a qualitative study. The researchers collected the qualitative data by conducting in-depth interviews with key informants. A sample of 45 respondents were selected by using the purposive sampling method and the collected data were analyzed and presented using descriptive analysis.
Main result: The result of the study revealed the wisdom of growing indigo, making indigo cake, making indigo pots, dyeing, matmi silk cloth and weaving. Such collective wisdom has been inherited and is practiced in many communities. As for the continuation of the value of indigo-dyed textile wisdom, it was found that the inherited wisdom is commonly observed both by the: people in the community and people outside the community. The results found four methods of inheriting indigo-dyed textile wisdom: (1) telling or lecturing, (2) demonstrating, (3) actual practice, and (4) establishment of learning resource centers or media for learning.
Relevance to Thai Studies: The research for this article will provide a better understanding of the value of the cultural heritage of Tai-Thai ethnic groups related to woven textiles, which will help people in the community see their values and promote income for weavers, as well as serving as a guideline for driving indigo-dyed textiles as a sustainable cultural heritage.
Conclusion: This research article is important because the results are expected to provide a better understanding of the value of the cultural heritage of Tai-Thai ethnic groups related to woven textiles, which will help people in the community see their values. The inheritance of this value of the indigo-dyed textile wisdom, in addition to supporting and promoting income for weavers, is a guideline for upgrading indigo-dyed textiles as a sustainable cultural heritage.
