Main Article Content
Abstract
The analysis on home landscaping styles in Thailand during 2017-2021 aimed to add up to the existing knowledge on the evolution of Thai home landscaping styles in different periods, the data of which were analyzed up until 2016, and to understand and the owners’ reasons for selecting these styles. The data were collected from “Baanlaesuan” magazine published during 2017-2021. The gardens were divided into 2 groups: 1) new gardens and 2) renovated gardens. The total number of home gardens found was 88 gardens from 12 provinces, covering the central, northern, northeastern, and eastern regions. There were 41 new gardens (46.59%) and 47 renovated ones (53.40%). Twenty nine garden styles were found. The top 3 most popular styles were 1) tropical garden (18 gardens - 20.45%), 2) English garden (11 gardens – 12.50%), and 3) modern garden (10 gardens – 11.36%). Considering the new and the renovated groups, the top 3 most popular styles of the 41 new gardens were 1) tropical garden, modern garden and French Provence garden at the same number (6 gardens each – 14.63%), 2) English garden (5 gardens – 12.20%), and 3) tropical forest garden and Japanese garden at the same number (3 gardens – 7.32%). The top 3 most popular styles of the 47 renovated gardens were 1) tropical garden (12 garden – 25.53%), 2) English garden (6 gardens – 12.77%), and 3) modern garden (4 gardens – 8.51%). More variety of garden styles, created by the combination of different styles, were found during the study period. Considering the study of home landscaping styles since 1977, it was found that tropical garden has been continuously popular. This is probably because of the green and shady atmosphere which is suitable for Thailand’s hot climate. Over the period of 10 years, during 2012-2021, the top three most popular garden styles were 1) tropical garden, 2) English garden, and 3) modern garden. The top 3 most popular reasons for selecting landscaping styles were 1) preference 47.06%, 2) function 19.33%, and 3) easy maintenance 14.29%.
