บทคัดย่อ
การศึกษานี้เป็นการทบทวนวรรณกรรมเรื่องพื้นที่สาธารณะด้วยการศึกษาเทียบเคียงจากประวัติศาสตร์สากลและประวัติศาสตร์ไทย ในประเด็นการนิยามความหมายและความสำคัญ และวิวัฒนาการการใช้พื้นที่กับรูปแบบวิถีชีวิต ทั้งใน
บริบทสากลและในบริบทของประเทศ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อค้นหาปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อบทบาทของพื้นที่สาธารณะในการรองรับผู้ใช้งาน และการเปลี่ยนผ่านบทบาทของพื้นที่สาธารณะของสังคมไทย ผลการศึกษาบ่งชี้ถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกายภาพ
พื้นที่กับผู้ใช้งานจากการเทียบเคียงพื้นที่สาธารณะของไทยและสากล ซึ่งความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าวมีลักษณะการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่สอดคล้องกับพลวัตของเมืองที่พื้นที่สาธารณะนั้นตั้งอยู่ โดยปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อบทบาทของพื้นที่สาธารณะในการรองรับผู้ใช้งาน
ได้แก่ ลักษณะทางกายภาพของพื้นที่ ผู้ใช้พื้นที่ และสภาพสังคม นอกจากนี้ การศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงผ่านบทบาทการใช้พื้นที่สาธารณะของไทยสำหรับกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน ดังนี้ 1) นันทนาการของเมืองและปฏิสัมพันธ์
ทางสังคม 2) การแลกเปลี่ยนสินค้าและซื้อขาย 3) การแสดงออกถึงความเชื่อและศาสนา 4) พื้นที่ทางการเมืองเพื่อการแสดงพลังประชาชน 5) การศึกษาและเรียนรู้ 6) การส่งเสริมคุณภาพชีวิต 7) การสะท้อนค่านิยมและฐานะทางสังคมของผู้
ใช้พื้นที่ 8) การรองรับการสัญจรและเชื่อมต่อ 9) การอำนวยความสะดวกสบาย และ 10) การเป็นจุดหมายตาและจินตภาพเมือง ดังนั้น แนวทางการสร้างสรรค์พื้นที่สาธารณะของไทยจึงควรตระหนักถึงวิถีชีวิตและกิจกรรมในพื้นที่ของผู้ใช้งานจาก
อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน เพื่อเกิดประโยชน์สูงสุดกับคนและเมือง
