Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate awareness and acceptance of personnel regarding the implementation of environmental management system (ISO 14001) and to examine factors related to the personnel’s awareness and acceptance in the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP). The samples in this study were 224 officers of ONEP. Data were collected by using questionnaires. Additional data were collected by interviewing 13 administrators and representatives of the ISO 14001 team. Statistics used for data analysis were frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, t-test, F-test, pair wise comparisons using LSD and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, at significant level of 0.05. The results showed that the majority of the samples were female, 26-33 years old, earned a bachelor's degree or higher, worked at the ONEP less than 5 years, worked under the Office of Environmental Impact Assessment, were government officers, received trainings on the environmental management system in the course of environmental problems. Their knowledge about environmental management were at moderate level as well as their level of information receiving about environmental management system. Their awarenesses of the environmental management system were at high level while their acceptances on the system were moderately high. The test of hypothesis revealed that 2 factors related to the environmental awareness were environmental trainings and knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001. Three factors significantly related to the acceptances of implementation of ISO 14001 were age, knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001, and awareness of the importance of ISO 14001.
