Entrepreneurial Intention of University Students in selected Southeast Asian Countries
Main Article Content
Abstract
Universities in Southeast Asia play an important role in developing an entrepreneurial mindset as well as providing students with basic business knowledge and skills for starting a business. Developing entrepreneurship for students requires understanding a student's motivation or intention to become an entreprenuer and the factors that influence that intention. The objectives of this study were 1) to study entrepreneurial intentions of final year undergraduate students in business and economics in Thailand, Laos and Myanmar; 2) to explore determinants of entrepreneurial intentions in the light of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) including attitude of being entrepreneurship, subjective norm, perceived behaviour control and other factors namely personal business environment, past entrepreneurial experience and personal values. The sample consisted of 854 students from the Faculty of Business Administration or the Faculty of Economics from 3 countries in Southeast Asia, namely Thailand, Myanmar and Lao PDR. Research instrument was a self-administered questionnaire distributed via both online and sending to student email. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and Standard Deviation The hypothesis testing was performed using multiple regression analysis at the significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the students had a high level of entrepreneurial intention, positive attitude of being entrepreneurship, high level of subjective norm, and moderate level of perceived behaviour control. Hypothesis testing found that in overall, attitude of being entrepreneurship, subjective norm, perceived behaviour control, personal business environment, and past entrepreneurial experience had a significant positive influence on entrepreneurial intentions but not the personal personal value. The results of this study provide universities in the region with implications that can be used to develop appropriate entrepreneurial program for their students.
