Abstract

Cross section descriptive study was performed to investigate the prevalence and to determine associated factors of thrombocytopenia in dogs visited the Animal Hospital of Chiang Rai Rajabhat University (CRRU). Blood samples were collected from 36 dogs from June to September 2022. Platelet counts were examined by using the VetScan HM5 blood monitor by Zoetis, and the associated factors of thrombocytopenia were obtained from the constructed questionnaires and the animal medical records. The study revealed that the prevalence of thrombocytopenia in dogs visited CRRU Animal Hospital was 41.67% (15/36). Using Logistic Regression method, a statistically associated factor of thrombocytopenia was the history of blood parasite infection (OR = 8.890, 95%CI = 8.552 – 9.928, p-value = 0.003). The study results could be used as a primary and useful information for veterinarians as well as the dog owners in disease preventing and surveillance of thrombocytopenia from blood parasite in dogs. This also could be the fundamental information for the further, advanced studies.
