Development of Video Media on Thai Spelling Instruction Using the Douyin Application for Chinese Undergraduate Students Learning Thai

This research aimed to: (1) investigate the Thai spelling problems of Chinese students; (2) develop video media on Thai spelling using the Douyin application; and (3) examine the effects of the developed media on learners’ Thai spelling ability and satisfaction. The study employed a research and development (R&D) design. The sample consisted of 25 Chinese undergraduate students studying Thai. The research instruments included six video clips on Thai spelling delivered via the Douyin application, one clip per week for six weeks, a pretest and posttest, and a learner satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, the dependent-samples t-test, and effect size (Cohen’s d). The findings revealed that the learners’ major spelling problems involved incorrect final consonant patterns, homophones, and words containing silent letters. The developed video media were evaluated and certified as being of good to very good quality. The results of the experiment showed that the posttest scores were significantly higher than the pretest scores in all aspects at the .05 level, with very large effect sizes (d = 1.41–2.79). The overall mean score increased from 55.84 to 84.40 out of 90. The learners’ satisfaction with the media was at the highest level (M = 4.76, SD = 0.44). The findings indicate that the Douyin-based video media were effective in promoting Thai spelling learning among Chinese learners.
