Developing a Financial Literacy Curriculum for Teachers in the Digital Age

Abstract
Financial literacy is an essential 21st-century skill that teachers should possess to enhance their own quality of life and effectively transfer knowledge to students. This aligns with Thailand’s 20-Year National Strategy (2018–2037), the National Education Plan (2017–2036), and the policies of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), all of which emphasize the promotion of financial management skills in the education system. This article aims to develop a financial literacy curriculum tailored for teachers in the digital era. The proposed curriculum consists of three core dimensions:
(1) foundational financial knowledge, such as saving, investing, and budgeting; (2) financial decision-making skills, including goal setting and evaluating financial options; and (3) attitudes and behaviors, focusing on financial discipline and responsibility. The curriculum development process involves four stages: needs assessment, course structure design, selection of appropriate technologies and learning formats, and the creation of digital learning media. The benefits of the curriculum go beyond individual behavior change by fostering financial discipline, reducing the risk of new debt, and enhancing teachers’ roles as financial leaders within schools and communities. Moreover, the curriculum provides a framework for long-term policy integration and sustainable impact at the national level.
