Abstract

Retranslation is the phenomenon generally found in the field of translation, specifically in the published works with remarkable literary merits. The purpose of this study is to discover contributing factors that influence the emergence of retranslation that subsequently causes a unique phenomenon. An extensive review of retranslation-related theories and concepts suggested by noted scholars is conducted and followed by the analysis of Animal Farm by George Orwell, which has been retranslated from English to Thai for ten times from 1959 to 2017. The scope of this analysis focuses mainly on the translated versions’
paratexts, coupled with the comparative study on social and political contexts in Thailand during the 58 years of Animal Farm's retranslations. The paratexts are drawn from six Thai translations of Animal Farm, namely Saitharn, Kiatkajorn Chaisangsookkul, Colonel Chaiyaphruek Piloksiri, Bancha Suwannanon, Suangapsorn Kasikranund, and Petch Patpirat. According to the study, it has been found that Animal Farm tends to be retranslated into Thai during major political conflicts and shifts in political power. It can therefore be concluded that the multiple retranslated texts are produced to fulfil the demand of readers and promote the ruling party’s political ideology to the public in accordance with the social contexts in respective periods, and that Animal Farm is likely to be further retranslated in the future as the unfavorable political climate and power shifts in Thailand are likely to continue.
