The Importance of Military Interpretation and Roles of Military Interpreters to the Missions of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters

Abstract
This article describes a brief history of interpretation in Thailand as related to the current military interpretation. It explores the roles of interpreters in different kinds of societies that use language(s), various perspectives on their roles and their roles in the military context. In particular, it emphasizes the mission of military interpretation that supports the operations of the Royal Thai Armed Forces and those of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters. In addition, it includes the roles, importance and duties of military interpreters, the needs for them to achieve their mission in order to support the missions of the Royal Thai Armed Forces as a whole. The article offers guidelines on how to develop and maintain military interpreters’ status, how to produce a new breed of efficient military interpreter to solve the problem of the shortage of military interpreters both at present and in the future, and how to produce work motivation for them or those who perform military interpretation, desirable characteristics of military interpreters as well as other relevant activities on military interpretation training of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters.
