Abstract

Dan-aran Saengthong’s “ Asorapit” is a short story in which Thai cultural elements play an important role in its creation: local beliefs, utensils, proper names of the characters and places, and shows. This literary work was translated into many languages, including Spanish, a language of a country of which the culture is different from Thai culture. This article aims to analyze translation techniques applied in the Spanish version, translated through an intermediate language, which is French, in order to convey Thai cultural elements to the readers in the target language. The analysis comprises of categorizing cultural elements, selecting translation techniques of different theories, and analyzing some examples from “Asorapit”’s French and Spanish versions. The result shows
that a combination of many different techniques is used. The most frequently adopted ones are “adaptation”, localizing the text to the target culture, and “establishing equivalence”, or looking for the appropriate equivalent in the target culture. Even though, most examples are directly translated from the French version, some exceptions revealed that the Spanish translator opted for other techniques that can better convey the cultural elements in the Thai original version.
