The Study on Scope of Forensic Science in Thailand and the Number of Forensic Practitioners Categorized by Expertise of Forensic Science Discipline

Abstract
The aims of this research were to study on the scope of forensic science in Thailand, examine the number of forensic science practitioners categorized by expertise of forensic science discipline, and propose of guidelines in forensic operation enhancement in Thailand. This qualitative study was performed by documentary research, in-depth interview and face to face interviews from key informants and focus group, while research data was analyzed by the content analysis. From the study, it was found that (1) the scope of forensic science in Thailand can be divided into 13 branches in government section, 4 branches in private section, and 5 professional fields with overlapping forensic science operation, (2) the number of forensic practitioners was 1,733 in total, consisting of 1,657 forensic practitioners from government sector and a minimum of 76 persons from private sectors, and (3) guidelines for enhancement of the forensic science operation in Thailand were as follows: Role and responsibility – establishment of forensic science professional council and registration of each field experts for quality control and standardization, Education – expanding higher degree of forensic science in bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctoral degree and promoting higher level of study, and Law - enrolment of professional forensic science under standard control and code of ethics.
