Role of Local Government Organizations in Crime Prevention

Abstract

The research aims to study the role, problem, obstacle and guideline or appropriate scheme of local government organization in order to prevent crime. It is the combination of quantitative and qualitative research. The sample group was randomly selected from each province, which were 260 samples in total. For the qualitative study, the sample group of 19 local organizations with the Good Practices of crime prevention was purposively selected. The results showed that roles and importance of the local government organizations on crime prevention were under the frameworks as follows; the role in crime prevention by public participation, the role in crime prevention by monitoring the groups of potential risk offender, and the role in crime prevention through prevention of recidivism. However, crucial problems and obstacles of crime prevention were addressed, for instance, the misunderstanding of crime prevention to crime suppression, the problem of being stigmatized by society, national political issues, and the non-corresponding role of the inspection organization in crime prevention. The important suggestion is to promote the role of local government organizations in crime prevention along with the amendment of laws and regulation in terms of the local government organization duty and authority.
