The Effectiveness of Using Quizlet Online Flashcards on Vocabulary Knowledge and the English Learning Motivation of EFL University Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental component in developing English language skills. However, studies show that higher education students face challenges with insufficient vocabulary knowledge for everyday communication, lack effective vocabulary learning strategies, and demonstrate low learning motivation. International research confirms a direct correlation between vocabulary knowledge and success in foreign language learning. This study aimed to compare English vocabulary learning achievement before and after using Quizlet online flashcards and to examine students' opinions and motivation regarding the use of this tool. The sample consisted of 31 second-year undergraduate students from Poh-Chang Academy of Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin. The instruments for data collection included pre- and post-vocabulary knowledge tests, a questionnaire on opinions, and interviews to study learning motivation. The research findings revealed that post-test scores after learning with Quizlet online flashcards were significantly higher than pre-test scores at the 0.05 level of statistical significance. Students expressed moderate opinions about the tool, with most reporting enjoyment in learning through this activity, improved ability to learn, remember, and review vocabulary, and enhanced learning motivation through an engaging atmosphere and classroom participation. Additionally, students suggested continued use of this activity in the classroom because it increases vocabulary learning efficiency without impacting teaching time in other subjects.
