Narrating Gender and Sexual Diversity Through Focus Group Discussions: Opportunities, Challenges, and Ethics of Amplifying Voices in Qualitative Research

Abstract
This academic article aims to review and analyze qualitative research methodologies in the study of SOGIESC within the context of Thai society. It demonstrates that "narratives" are not merely neutral raw data, but rather cultural-political tools used to deconstruct dominant discourses and reclaim the identities of marginalized groups. When narratives are integrated with the "focus group" method, this tool transforms into a "semi-public safe space" that facilitates the co-weaving of collective stories, revealing fluid and intersectional identities in a way that surpasses individual interviews. And it uses descriptive analysis and presentation. However, employing these tools poses methodological challenges within the Thai cultural context, such as group conformity, self-censorship, and internal fractures within non-homogeneous groups, which are often overshadowed by the dominant agendas of urban, middle-class demographics. Furthermore, at the intersection of group dynamics and research ethics, researchers continue to confront power relations regarding interpretation and representation. This article therefore proposes methodological solutions through triangulation, the use of vignettes and dialogues to preserve the raw voices of informants, and reflexive self-critique. These approaches aim to prevent researchers from becoming discursive authoritarians, thereby elevating the weaving of narratives into a political and ethical mission that genuinely respects human dignity.
