Linguistic Strategies Used for Telling Bad News in Thai Language and Motivational Concerns

This research aimed to study linguistic strategies that Thai people adopted to tell bad news, as well as their motivational concerns while performing the act. Research results indicated that Thai speakers adopted mitigating strategies more frequently than bold-on record strategies. An analysis of their motivational concerns revealed that there were two types of motivational concerns i.e. the purpose of conversation and the context of conversation. Thai speakers placed a priority on maintaining good relationship with the interlocutor. This linguistic behaviorur might be motivated by three sociocultural factors, i.e. an interdependent view of self, collectivism, and high contextual culture
