ดัชนีมวลกายเป็นสิ่งสำคัญในการประเมินภาวะโภชนาการของสตรีตั้งครรภ์ได้ทั้งภาวะโภชนาการเกินและภาวะการขาดสารอาหาร ซึ่งทั้งสองภาวะนี้มีผลกระทบต่อสตรีตั้งครรภ์ และจะส่งผลต่อการเจริญเติบโตและพัฒนาการของทารกในครรภ์ ดังนั้นบทบาทของพยาบาลจึงมีสำคัญต่อการส่งเสริมสุขภาพเกี่ยวกับภาวะโภชนาการในสตรีตั้งครรภ์ เพื่อลดภาวะแทรกซ้อนที่อาจเกิดขึ้นต่อสตรีตั้งครรภ์และทารกในครรภ์ และผลลัพธ์ที่ดีต่อการตั้งครรภ์
