Military Strategies and Their Applications to Business Management

The word LstrategyN derived from the Greek strategos and was originated from the military need to defeat their enemies. Since 1980s, however, many business strategists realized that there was a vast knowledge base from these military strategies. They accepted that these military strategies have had a significant impact on the adoption and adaptation of business strategies. Numbers of famous military strategies have been examined and used as business guidance. Among those recognized ones is from the Chinese Sun Tzuss The Art of War , written in 400 B.C., and is being taught in many well-known business schools. Many Chinese, however, are more familiar with The 36 Strategies (or The 36 Stratagems). The book of 36 Stratagems have been in circulation for more than three hundred years. This book comprises 36 strategies by an unknown scholar during the end of Ming Dynasty. Two of them, Lock the gates to catch the bandits (strategy 22) and Make flowers bloom on a tree (strategy 29), were selected and were discussed here as examples in this paper. Their applications and the comparison to other business strategies are also included here.
