Upper Northern Thailand the center of culture and society in the past is the area that have long been studied, particularly in the disciplines of Sociology and Anthropology. The Northern Thai region was once seen as “the Anthropologist's Paradise' because the area is riched of cultural diversity and the settlements of various ethnic groups. However, this cultural specificity and dynamism of Lanna society have yet been reflected in those former works and research studies. This article thus attempts to examine academic works and research studies on historical developments and Lanna society which have been conducted and published since a hundred years ago. It aims to show the state of knowledge in this area study and to search for the new approaches and research directions in the study of Lanna society.
