Community, the Sense of Community and Chao Lay Community Rights – Complexity and Conditionality
Abstract
This paper was written in remembrance of Ajarn Chaladchai Ramitanond, especially on his concepts and conceptualization, his transforming the commonplace to the extraordinary under new perspectives, and his analysis of holistic view. These have inspired the author to reflect on the case of Chao Lay Indigenous peoples who used to be marine nomads in Thailand. Their ways of living were constrained by the rigid structure of beliefs, policies, laws, and implementation of these. At the same time, while looking at these "nomadic paths" which have gradually disappeared, it was found that not all of them were exactly the same. The authors analyzed and reviewed the data to understand the complexity and conditionality of Chao Lay nomadic communities and the meaning of the word “community”, then suggested the approach to promote community rights in the case of Chao Lay
