บทคัดย่อ
บทความชิ้นนี้สืบสาวพัฒนาการของนิคมเกษตรกรรมยางพาราในแม่โขงจากยุคอาณานิคมสู่หลังอาณานิคม บทความเสนอว่าความรุ่งเรืองของอุตสาหกรรมยางพาราในยุคการปกครองของฝรั่งเศสเกิดขึ้นได้จากระบบทุนนิยมแบบอาณานิคม อย่างไรก็ตามการขยายตัวของยางพาราในภาคใต้ของลาวในปัจจุบันกลับดำเนินไปภายใต้ตรรกะของทุนนิยมชายแดน สำหรับรัฐชาติลาวสมัยใหม่แล้วยางพาราได้กลายเป็นพืชมหัศจรรย์ที่เป็นตัวแทนทั้งศิลปะแห่งรัฐ และเครื่องมือของการพัฒนาซึ่งถูกเชื่อว่าจะนำพาประเทศและประชาชนไปให้พ้นจากความยากจนนิคมเกษตรกรรมยางพาราขนาดใหญ่ในภาคใต้ของลาวเกิดขึ้นจากความสัมพันธ์อันแนบแน่นระหว่างรัฐชายแดนและนักลงทุนข้ามชาติจากเวียดนามและกลไกอันอ่อนแอของรัฐศูนย์กลาง การสูญเสียที่ดินขนานใหญ่ การล่มสลายของสังคมชาวนาและการดำรงชีพ จึงเป็นคุณลักษณะของเศรษฐกิจการเมืองของชายแดนลาวในปัจจุบัน
