ความตายที่มองเห็นได้: นกหัสดีลิงค์ในฐานะเทคโนโลยีเชิงสัญญะในพิธีกรรมศพล้านนา

บทคัดย่อ
นกหัสดีลิงค์ หรือนกยักษ์ในตำนานที่มีงวงเหมือนช้าง ซึ่งถูกสร้างขึ้นเป็นปราสาทศพสูงกว่าสองชั้น ไม่ได้เพียงปรากฏในพิธีกรรมความตายของล้านนา หากทำงานในพิธีกรรมนั้น บทความนี้ถามว่าวัตถุพิธีกรรมชิ้นนี้ทำงานอย่างไร ไม่ใช่หมายถึงอะไร การศึกษาใช้การวิเคราะห์ชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาเชิงตีความแบบทุติยภูมิบนฐานข้อมูลภาคสนามระยะยาวจากเจ็ดจังหวัดภาคเหนือของไทย (พ.ศ. 2559–2563) โดยนำกรอบสัญญวิทยาศาสนา วัตถุพิธีกรรม และปรากฏการณ์วิทยาเชิงพื้นที่มาตีความข้อมูลที่มีอยู่ผ่านกรอบทางทฤษฎีที่งานวิจัยต้นทางยังไม่ได้นำมาใช้
ข้อค้นพบชี้ว่า นกหัสดีลิงค์ทำหน้าที่เป็นเทคโนโลยีเชิงสัญญะ ไม่ใช่สัญลักษณ์ที่ถ่ายทอดความเชื่อ แต่เป็นชุดของการปฏิบัติ การจัดวางเชิงพื้นที่ และการกำกับสายตา ที่ร่วมกันออกแบบเงื่อนไขให้ความตายสามารถปรากฏต่อสาธารณะได้อย่างมีระเบียบ โดยไม่สั่นคลอนโครงสร้างทางอารมณ์และศีลธรรมของชุมชน การบรรจบกันของขอบฟ้าในฐานะโครงสร้างการรับรู้ ความสูงในฐานะภาษาศีลธรรม และกาลเวลาพิธีกรรมหลังออกพรรษา ไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นโดยบังเอิญ หากสะท้อนวิศวกรรมทางสังคมที่สังคมล้านนาสร้างสั่งสมมาผ่านประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนาน
บทความเสนอแนวคิด การปรากฏให้เห็นได้ของความตายผ่านพิธีกรรม ซึ่งโต้แย้งว่าพิธีกรรมไม่ได้ซ่อนความตายจากคนเป็น หากออกแบบเงื่อนไขอย่างพิถีพิถันว่าความตายจะถูกมองอย่างไร ด้วยระเบียบใด และเพื่อยืนยันศีลธรรมร่วมแบบใด แนวคิดนี้ตั้งอยู่บนสองมิติเสริมกัน ได้แก่ ปฏิสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมแนวดิ่งในวัตถุพิธีกรรม และขอบฟ้าในฐานะโครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางศาสนาและสังคม กรอบแนวคิดดังกล่าวเปิดพื้นที่ให้การศึกษาเปรียบเทียบพิธีกรรมความตายข้ามวัฒนธรรม โดยสนทนากับงานของ Philippe Ariès, Birgit Meyer, Webb Keane และ Maurice Merleau-Ponty ในขณะที่รักษาความเฉพาะของบริบทล้านนาไว้อย่างเคารพ
