บทคัดย่อ
ประเด็นหลักของการอภิปรายในบทความนี้เน้นที่การสำรวจความคิดของนิธิในเรื่องประวัติศาสตร์ไทยและล้านนา เหตุใดนิธิจึงหันมาสนใจเรื่อง ‘โซเมีย’ ข้อเสนอเรื่องโซเมียของ เจมส์ ซี สก็อตต์ และนักวิชาการคนอื่น ตลอดจนข้อมูลและการศึกษาเชิงวิชาการจำนวนหนึ่งเพื่อเสนอภาพของโซเมีย ผู้คน และพัฒนาการทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่เกิดขึ้นในดินแดนนี้ งานเขียนที่เกี่ยวกับ ‘โซเมีย’ จำนวนไม่น้อย รวมถึงงานของนิธิบางชิ้นสะท้อนให้เห็นว่าโซเมียซึ่งครอบคลุมพื้นที่ของประเทศไทยด้วย เป็นดินแดนที่มีความกว้างใหญ่ไพศาล รุ่มรวยด้วยทรัพยากรธรรมชาตินานาชนิด มีความหลากหลายของผู้คนและวัฒนธรรม-สังคม ส่งผลให้พลวัตทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจ-การค้ามีความซับซ้อน ด้วยเหตุนี้ หากประสงค์ที่จะเขียนประวัติศาสตร์ไทยฉบับใหม่ หรือ “ประวัติศาสตร์ไทย ‘นอกขนบ’” ตามความคิดของนิธิ ผู้เขียนจำเป็นต้องเข้าใจถึงความซับซ้อนของโซเมียที่มีต่อพัฒนาการของผู้คนทุกกลุ่มที่อาศัยอยู่ในดินแดนนี้
