Abstract

This study analyzed the acknowledgements in French written by Thai graduate students in both the generic structure, using Swales' move analysis, and socio-cultural aspects found in the acknowledgements. The analysis revealed two moves: thanking move and announcing move. Each move consisted of the typical unique particular sequence of steps. Moreover, the acknowledgements revealed some Thai socio-cultural aspects: Buddhism and family institution. This study could be applied to the acknowledgements in other languages or in other fields of study.
