Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the social network characteristics of Thai-Isan labor brokers. Data were collected via in-depth interviews as well as by participatory and non-participatory observations with 30 key informants who were labor brokers of overseas employment service provider, labor agency company, in database of Ministry of Labor. A snowball technique was used to select key informants from Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nong Khai, and Buri Ram. Data were analyzed by content analysis using the ATLAS.ti program and by social network analysis using the Pajek program. The results of the study indicated that the social networks of Isan labor brokers consisted of both local and regional networks. The three types of local networks were: single-center network, dual-center network, and non-center network or circle network. On the other hand, the type of regional networks were one-mode networks, connected networks, and informal networks. The results suggested that local networks of labor brokers should be followed up or monitored by the relevant government agencies in each area.
